How to Not Feel Awkward during a Boudoir shoot
Hey Beautiful,
If there is one concern I hear more than almost any other, it is this: “I really want to do a boudoir session, but I’m afraid I’m going to feel awkward.”
Honestly, I completely understand where that fear comes from. Most women who contact me have never done anything remotely similar to a boudoir session before. They are stepping into unfamiliar territory, which can feel intimidating. After all, it is not every day that you find yourself in front of a camera wearing lingerie while someone tells you how beautiful you are.
What often surprises women is that nearly every client who walks through my door has the exact same concern. It does not matter whether she is twenty-five or sixty-five, a bride-to-be or a grandmother, a fitness enthusiast or someone who has not felt confident in years. The nerves are incredibly common, and they are nothing to be embarrassed about.
As the owner and lead photographer of Couture Boudoir®, I have learned that feeling awkward at the beginning of a boudoir session is completely normal. Fortunately, it is also temporary. In fact, most women are amazed by how quickly those nerves disappear once the experience begins.
Why Boudoir Feels So Intimidating
One reason boudoir can feel intimidating is because it asks you to do something that many women rarely do. Most of us spend our lives focusing on other people. We take care of our families, build careers, support our friends, and handle countless responsibilities every day. Somewhere along the way, we often stop paying attention to ourselves.
A boudoir session shifts that focus back to you. Suddenly, you are the center of attention. The experience is designed entirely around making you feel beautiful, celebrated, and confident. While that sounds wonderful, it can also feel unfamiliar at first.
Additionally, many women worry that they are somehow supposed to know how to pose or act in front of the camera. They imagine that everyone else who books a boudoir session must have some secret knowledge that they are missing. Meanwhile, they are convinced they will be the one person who feels uncomfortable.
Nothing could be further from the truth.
The Biggest Myth About Boudoir
One of the biggest misconceptions about boudoir photography is the belief that you need confidence before you book a session. Women often tell me they want to lose weight first, feel better about their bodies first, or become more confident before stepping in front of the camera.
However, confidence is not a requirement for boudoir.
In fact, many women book a session because confidence is exactly what they are hoping to gain. They want to reconnect with themselves, celebrate a milestone, mark a new chapter in life, or simply see themselves through a more positive lens.
Over the years, I have photographed hundreds of women, and very few arrived feeling completely confident. Most showed up with insecurities, doubts, and fears. Yet by the end of their session, they often walked away feeling stronger and more empowered than they expected.
That transformation is one of the most rewarding parts of my job.
You Are Not Expected to Know What You’re Doing
Another reason women worry about feeling awkward is because they assume they will be expected to pose themselves. Many clients confess that they have no idea what to do with their hands, how to stand, or even how to smile naturally in photographs.
Fortunately, that is not your responsibility.
When you book a session with me, I guide you through every single pose. From the position of your shoulders to the placement of your fingertips, I provide detailed direction throughout the entire experience. Rather than expecting you to perform, I coach you every step of the way.
As a result, you never have to stand there wondering what comes next. Instead, you can focus on relaxing and enjoying the experience while I take care of the details.
This level of guidance often comes as a huge relief to clients. Once they realize they do not have to figure everything out on their own, much of the pressure begins to disappear.
The First Few Minutes Matter Most
Something fascinating happens during nearly every boudoir session. The first few minutes are often the most nerve-racking, but they are also when the biggest shift begins to occur.
At the start of a session, many women are hyperaware of every little thing. They are thinking about how they look, whether they are posing correctly, and what the camera is seeing. Because of that, they can feel a little self-conscious.
Then, gradually, the atmosphere changes.
Conversation begins flowing naturally. Laughter starts filling the room. We celebrate small victories together, and before long, the focus shifts away from nervousness. Instead of worrying about how they look, clients begin enjoying the experience itself.
By the middle of the session, most women are noticeably more relaxed. Their movements become more natural, their smiles become more genuine, and their confidence begins to shine through. Many clients tell me afterward that they completely forgot they were nervous.
Trusting the Process Makes All the Difference
One of the best pieces of advice I can offer is to trust the process.
I know that can feel difficult when you are stepping outside your comfort zone. However, boudoir photography involves so much more than simply pointing a camera at someone and taking a picture. Every aspect of the experience is carefully designed to help you look and feel your best.
Professional hair and makeup help you feel polished and pampered. Strategic lighting highlights your features beautifully. Thoughtful posing creates flattering angles. Even wardrobe choices play an important role in creating stunning images.
Because all of these elements work together, you do not need to spend your session worrying about how everything will come together. My job is to handle those details so you can focus on being present in the moment.
When women allow themselves to trust the process, the results are often incredible.
Remember Why You Said Yes
Whenever nerves begin creeping in, I encourage clients to remember why they booked their session in the first place.
Perhaps you are creating a gift for your future husband. Maybe you are celebrating a milestone birthday or anniversary. Some women book a session after a significant life change, while others simply want to do something meaningful for themselves.
Whatever your reason may be, it deserves to be honored.
Keeping that purpose at the forefront of your mind can help shift your focus away from fear and back toward excitement. Instead of worrying about whether you look perfect, you begin embracing the experience for what it truly is: an opportunity to celebrate yourself.
That mindset can completely change the way you approach your session.
The Confidence You Take Home
One of my favorite moments happens when clients see their images for the first time. The woman who spent weeks worrying about feeling awkward is suddenly looking at photographs she never imagined were possible.
Time and time again, I hear the same reaction.
“I can’t believe that’s me.”
What makes those moments so special is not simply the photographs themselves. It is the realization that the beauty, strength, and confidence they are seeing existed all along. The session did not create those qualities. Instead, it gave them permission to finally see them.
That is why boudoir is so much more than a photoshoot. It is an experience that allows women to reconnect with themselves in a way they often have not in years.
You Can Do This
If you are worried about feeling awkward during a boudoir shoot, please know that you are not alone. Nearly every woman who walks through my door feels exactly the same way at first. Nevertheless, those nerves rarely last long.
With the right guidance, a supportive environment, and a willingness to trust the process, what starts as uncertainty often transforms into confidence. More importantly, you may discover a version of yourself that has been there all along, simply waiting to be seen.
Years from now, you probably will not remember the nervous butterflies you felt before your session. Instead, you will remember how empowered you felt, how beautiful you looked, and how proud you were for stepping outside your comfort zone.
And honestly, that is exactly why I love what I do.
xo,
Critsey
