What 1,000 Boudoir Sessions Taught Me
Hey Beautiful,
After photographing over 1,000 women, here’s what I’ve learned…
When I first started photographing boudoir clients, I thought the experience was mostly about creating beautiful images. My goal was to help women feel comfortable, guide them through flattering poses, and deliver photographs they would treasure for years. While all of those things are still incredibly important, I’ve come to realize that boudoir photography is about something much deeper than the final images.
Every woman who steps in front of my camera brings her own story. Some are celebrating an engagement or wedding. Others are marking a milestone birthday, overcoming a difficult chapter, or simply deciding that it’s finally time to do something meaningful for themselves. Although their reasons for booking vary, there is one thing almost all of them have in common when they first reach out to me. They believe they need to change something about themselves before they’re ready.
Waiting for the Perfect Time
Over the years, I’ve heard every version of “I’ll do it later.” Women tell me they want to lose weight first, tone their arms, flatten their stomachs, or wait until life feels less hectic. They imagine that confidence will magically appear once they reach a certain number on the scale or achieve some personal goal.
What I’ve learned, however, is that confidence rarely arrives before action. More often, confidence is built through action. It grows when we choose to do something that feels a little uncomfortable and discover we’re capable of much more than we imagined.
Many of the women who arrive at their session feeling the most nervous end up leaving with the biggest smiles. They spend weeks worrying about every perceived flaw, only to discover that those insecurities were never the defining parts of who they are. By the end of the experience, they’re standing taller, laughing more, and seeing themselves through a completely different lens.
Women Are Often Their Own Worst Critics
One lesson that has become crystal clear after photographing so many women is that we tend to be much harder on ourselves than anyone else could ever be.
I’ve worked with women in their twenties and women in their seventies. I’ve photographed athletes, mothers, brides, business owners, cancer survivors, grandmothers, and women from every imaginable walk of life. Despite their differences, I hear many of the same concerns during nearly every consultation.
Women worry about stretch marks, cellulite, scars, wrinkles, loose skin, and all the little details they believe make them less beautiful. Meanwhile, I’m looking at someone who is strong, unique, and absolutely worthy of being photographed exactly as she is.
As photographers, we don’t see people the way they often see themselves. We notice the sparkle in someone’s eyes when she laughs. We notice confidence emerging as she relaxes into the experience. We see personality, warmth, strength, and beauty long before we ever notice the things she wishes she could change.
There Is No Such Thing as a Boudoir Body
One of my favorite things about boudoir photography is that it constantly reminds me that beauty doesn’t come in a single shape, size, or age group.
Some of my clients wear a size 2. Others wear a size 22. Some are in their twenties and preparing for their wedding day. Others are celebrating turning sixty or seventy and deciding they deserve to feel beautiful too. What connects them isn’t their appearance. It’s their willingness to show up and honor themselves.
Society spends a lot of time convincing women that they need to earn confidence or deserve celebration only after reaching some impossible standard. Boudoir photography has taught me the exact opposite. Every body tells a story, and every stage of life deserves to be documented and appreciated.
Instead of waiting for some future version of yourself, imagine celebrating the woman you are right now. After all, the woman you are today has overcome challenges, learned valuable lessons, and grown into someone remarkable. That version of you is already worthy of being seen.
Confidence Looks Different for Everyone
Another thing I’ve learned is that confidence doesn’t always look the way people expect it to.
Some women walk into their session ready to conquer the world. They immediately embrace the experience and enjoy every second of being photographed. Others need more reassurance and guidance before they begin to relax. Neither approach is right or wrong because confidence isn’t a personality type.
For many women, confidence simply means allowing themselves to be visible. It means accepting a compliment without dismissing it. It means looking at a photograph and appreciating what they see instead of immediately searching for flaws.
Throughout each session, I guide every pose, expression, and movement. My clients don’t need to know how to model, and they certainly don’t need experience in front of a camera. My job is to create an environment where they feel safe enough to let their authentic selves shine through.
The Photographs Become More Valuable With Time
One thing I never expected when I started my business was how meaningful these images would become years later.
Many women initially book a session as a gift for someone they love. They create albums for weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, or special occasions. While those gifts are always appreciated, something interesting happens over time. The photographs often become even more valuable to the women themselves.
As the years pass, clients frequently tell me they treasure their images because they captured a moment they can never get back. Life changes quickly. Bodies change. Relationships evolve. New chapters begin.
Having photographs that remind you of who you were during a particular season of life becomes incredibly powerful. They serve as proof that you were here, that you were beautiful, and that you deserved to take up space exactly as you were.
The Real Transformation
People often ask me whether boudoir photography is empowering, and my answer is always yes. However, the empowerment doesn’t come from becoming beautiful during a session because every woman who walks through my door is already beautiful.
The transformation happens when she finally allows herself to see it.
One of my favorite moments is watching clients view their images for the first time. Many become emotional because they aren’t seeing a stranger in those photographs. Instead, they’re seeing a version of themselves they’ve forgotten how to recognize.
They see strength where they expected weakness. They see beauty where they expected flaws. They see confidence where they thought insecurity would be obvious.
Those moments remind me why I love this work so much.
What I’ve Learned Most of All
After photographing more than 1,000 women, the most important lesson I’ve learned is that women are far more extraordinary than they give themselves credit for. Every day I meet women who are balancing careers, raising families, supporting friends, overcoming obstacles, and carrying responsibilities that nobody else sees.
Despite everything they accomplish, so many still struggle to recognize their own worth.
That is why boudoir photography matters. It isn’t really about lingerie, posing, or even photographs. Instead, it’s about creating a space where women can celebrate themselves without guilt, criticism, or apology. It’s an opportunity to pause, appreciate who they are, and remember that they are worthy of being seen.
If you’ve been waiting for the perfect moment to book your session, I hope you’ll remember something I’ve learned from photographing over 1,000 incredible women. The perfect moment rarely arrives. Confidence isn’t something you wait for. It is something you build.
Most importantly, you do not have to become a different version of yourself before you deserve to celebrate who you are today.
xo,
Critsey
