Charleston SC Engagement Session Shelley & Bret

I have to admit I got a little teary eyed when I read Shelley and Bret’s engagement story. I wanted to share with you in Shelly’s words because I think it is so INCREDIBLY romantic! Get tissues ready!

Question for the Bride: How did he propose?

“Bret’s proposal was incredibly meaningful for me and I’ll never forget that day. Last spring, we decided to plan a weekend in May to go up to Virginia so that I could show Bret where I grew up and where I went to college since they are both pretty close to each other. We left early in the morning on Sunday of Memorial Day weekend with plans to stop in my hometown of Martinsville, VA on the way to stay at Virginia Tech overnight where I went to college.

Once we arrived in Martinsville, I took him on an entire tour (which didn’t last long since it is so small!) but we bounced around to the key places such as the house I grew up in, my high school and the NASCAR race track of course! After riding around for a little while, there was one last stop that was the absolute most important place that I wanted to take Bret — my grandparents’ grave site. Growing up, my Grammy and Papa meant the world to me. I spent time with them almost every day and they took me everywhere: dance classes, gymnastics classes, soccer practice – and I’ll never forget how they would always pack a snack for me in the car so that I wouldn’t be hungry at my activities. They were the most genuine, caring, and wonderful people that I will always feel thankful to have had in my life.

From very early in our relationship, I had told Bret how special they both were to me and how I wished he had been able to meet them. When we got out of the car at the cemetery, the weather was beautiful with the sun shining. We spent some time talking about them and I reminisced about all of our wonderful memories together. As soon as I felt myself start getting upset, I turned and started to walk away back to the car and Bret quickly grabbed my hand. He said he had asked my Papa a very important question and he then got down on one knee. I was completely in shock – I had no idea he was going to propose that day. I’ll never forget the overwhelming feeling of love and how special it was to me. Although my grandparents will not be able to be with us on our wedding day, I’ll always cherish that they were able to be a part of the special day that we got engaged.”
